お客様の要望でステンレスフレットに交換です。

ボリュームポットのガリで交換しました。

ニッケルシルバーからステンレスフレットに交換すると音が硬くなります。

昔は音が「キンキン」すると言われていましたが、近年のステンレスフレットは金属の材質が変わったのかあまりキンキンはしないがハイが痛い傾向よりもミドルが硬い傾向になっています。
ローズ指板がエボニー指板になった様な硬さが出る音になります。

実際に削ってても分かりますが、昔よりも金属粒子が大きい？のか、手に伝わる感覚なので言葉にするのは難しいですがステンレスフレットは硬くて削れ難いとは言え昔はサクサクと乾いた削れ具合だったと思うのですが、近年のステンレスフレットはゴリゴリとした粒子が大きく粘りがある金属になっている気がします。

その辺りが音に影響が出ていると思います。
昔よりは音の痛みが出ない分、音の面ではステンレスフレットも使用し易い事になったと思いますので交換時の参考にして下さい。

This is a fret and pot replacement on a PRS Custom24.

At the customer’s request, we replaced the frets with stainless steel ones.

We also replaced the volume pot due to a scratchy sound.

Switching from nickel silver to stainless steel frets makes the tone harder.

In the past, people used to say the sound was “ringy,” but with recent stainless steel frets—perhaps due to a change in the metal composition—they don’t sound quite as ringy; instead of having piercing highs, the midrange tends to be harder.
The sound takes on a hardness similar to that of an ebony fingerboard instead of a rosewood one.

You can tell just by filing them—perhaps the metal particles are larger than they used to be? It’s hard to put into words since it’s a sensation transmitted through the hands, but while stainless steel frets are hard and difficult to file, I recall that in the past they filed away crisply and dryly. However, I feel that recent stainless steel frets have larger, gritty particles and a more viscous texture.

I believe this is what’s affecting the sound.
Since they don’t produce as much harshness as they used to, I think stainless steel frets have become easier to use in terms of sound, so please keep this in mind when replacing them.
